LANGUAGECERT Academic SELT (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) - An Ofqual regulated single four-skill language test for study visas. The test is multi-level and designed-specifically for those requiring a score across A2-C1 on the CEFR.

What documentation do I need to book a SELT exam?

- You must have a valid form of photographic ID, such as:
• A Passport
• EU ID card
• Valid Travel Document (this does not include Emergency Travel Documents)
• Biometric Residence Permits (BRP)*
• Biometric Residence Card (BRC)*
• Government ID card (only accepted in the country it was issued in)

You MUST ensure ALL your Candidate Profile details (names, date of birth, ID number, nationality) match identically the details contained within the ID.
Please note, you MUST bring the SAME photo ID on exam day.

*If your UK Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or UK Biometric Residence Card (BRC) expires on or after 31 December 2024, you can continue to use it to book a SELT after its expiry. You must bring your expired ID on your test day. BRPs/BRCs that expire prior to 31 December 2024 (e.g., November 2024) will not be accepted.

- For those booking & testing in the UK

UKVI has developed a digital immigration system and is replacing physical documents with an online record of an individual’s immigration status. This is known as an eVisa. eVisas are now accepted as a valid proof of identity for booking SELT tests in the United Kingdom.

You can now register for your SELT exam using an eVisa taking the following steps:
1. Create a UKVI account
2. Register for an eVisa view and prove
3. Choose the view and prove option “To prove my immigration status or anything else”
4. Generate a share code through eVisa view and prove (valid for 90 days)
5. Register and book your SELT exam with LANGUAGECERT
6. During the booking process, add your personal details (matching your eVisa records) and add your UKVI share code to our “ID number” field during the registration step
7. Your eVisa record will be accessible to our Test Centre administrator on the day of your test to check your identity
8. With an eVisa there is no need to bring any other form of physical ID to the test centre providing you register your personal details and eVisa share code correctly

When using an eVisa, you must ensure your SELT test is booked at least 48 hours in advance of your intended test date.

What happens if I have changed my name, and my name is different from the one on my identity document?

If you, as the Test Taker, have changed your name from the one in your identity document, you MUST PROVIDE ACCEPTABLE IDENTIFICATION OF YOUR NEW NAME.

The following documents will NOT be accepted:
• A marriage certificate
• UK spouse visa in a passport or a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
• Original deed poll change of name document

Where you do not have a valid identity document you should Contact the Home Office.

If you had a previous gender (including a different name) that you do not want the test centre staff to see or for it to show on your statement of results, you should email sensitivebookings@homeoffice.gov.uk before booking the test.

Preparing for your exam

Do I take all parts of my exam on the same day?

It depends on your exam and availability;

4-skill exams for LANGUAGECERT Academic SELT for study visas & LANGUAGECERT General SELT for work visas:
Split into Written (includes Reading, Listening and Writing) and Speaking components.
Can be booked on the same day subject to availability.
Both parts must be completed within 14 days.

2-skill exams for LANGUAGECERT International ESOL Speaking & Listening:
Single session testing both skills.

Will I need to use a computer in my SELT exam?

Yes, all LANGUAGECERT SELT exams are computer-based. The Written component (Reading, Listening, Writing) is completed on computer, while the Speaking component is conducted as an online conversation with a live examiner at the test centre.

What is the format of the SELT exams?

All LANGUAGECERT SELT exams are computer-based taken in a Test Centre.

LANGUAGECERT Academic SELT and LANGUAGECERT General SELT are both 4 skills exams and are broken into 2 parts:
• The Written component (Listening, Reading, Writing), which is taken on a computer.
• The Spoken component (Speaking), which is an online interview with a live Interlocutor.

The LANGUAGECERT International ESOL SELT (Speaking & Listening) exam is a short online conversation with a live interlocutor.

How do I prepare for my SELT exam?

LANGUAGECERT offers a range of practice papers, interview samples and interactive activities to help you prepare for your SELT exam. Check out our preparation page for LANGUAGECERT International ESOL SELT, for LANGUAGECERT Academic and LANGUAGECERT General.

Exam day

What are the key instructions I need to remember for test day?

Arrive prepared and on time to ensure a smooth exam experience.
Here are the essential requirements:

Critical Requirements - Don't Miss These!
Timing: Arrive 30 minutes early - late arrivals may not be admitted.
ID: Bring the exact same photo ID you used when booking.
Every detail on your ID must match perfectly with your booking (name, date of birth, ID number, nationality).

What to Expect on Arrival!
Check-in process with ID verification.
Exam instructions provided by test centre staff.
Summary of Exam Regulations - please read carefully.
Secure storage for your belongings.

What documentation MUST I bring to sit the exam?

Your photo ID is your ticket to take the exam - make sure it's exactly right.

You must bring the identical photo ID used when booking your exam. This means:
Same document type (passport, national ID, etc.).
Same ID number.
Exact name spelling (including middle names, hyphens, spacing).
Same date of birth.
Same nationality.

Common Issues to Avoid:
Using a different ID document than when booking.
Renewed passport/ID since booking (different number).
Name discrepancies due to marriage/legal changes.

If any details don't match exactly, you may be refused entry. Contact us immediately if your ID has changed since booking.

Do I keep my personal belongings during the exam?

Your belongings stay safe while you focus on your exam.

Free lockers available for all your personal items including:
Bags and backpacks.
Mobile phones (must be switched off).
Wallets and purses.
Jackets and outerwear.
Any electronic devices.

What's Not Allowed in the Exam Room:
Nothing personal can be brought into the testing area - this includes watches, jewelry, and any paper materials. The test centre provides everything you need for the exam.

Don't worry about security - your belongings are stored safely in individual lockers during your test.

Are bathroom breaks allowed during an exam?

Break policies depend on which SELT exam you're taking.

LANGUAGECERT Academic & LANGUAGECERT General SELT Exams:
Bathroom breaks permitted during Reading and Writing sections.
Important - The exam timer continues running during breaks.
Use breaks wisely as they reduce your available exam time.

LANGUAGECERT ESOL SELT (Speaking & Listening):
No breaks allowed - this is a shorter exam format designed to be completed without interruption.

Plan ahead: Use the bathroom before your exam begins to avoid any issues.

How can I help keep the test centre clean and safe?

Please dispose of all personal items properly before entering the exam room:
    Tissues.
    Empty drinks bottles and cups.
    Any other rubbish.

Use the bins provided in the pre-exam waiting areas. Thank you for helping maintain a clean environment for all test-takers.

Is car parking available at the SELT Test Centres?

No parking is provided at any of our test centres - plan your journey accordingly.

If driving, research nearby public car parks in advance;
Public transport recommended - often more reliable and stress-free.
Allow extra time - for finding parking and walking to the centre.
Use parking apps - to locate and potentially pre-book nearby spaces.

Remember you need to arrive 30 minutes early, so factor in:
Parking search time.
Walking distance from parking.
Potential traffic delays.

Better to arrive too early than risk missing your exam due to parking issues.
